2024 Grant Recipients
Beaver Creek Boosters
The Beaver Creek Boosters 4-H Club organized birthday boxes as their community service project. The members budgeted their money to purchase supplies to host a birthday party for ten families. The birthday box contents included a birthday bag, cake mix, frosting, vegetable oil, cake pan, streamers, candles, balloons, and a $10.00 gift card to purchase a small gift. The members visited the Otsego Food Pantry to deliver the birthday bags. The volunteers at the food pantry were very thankful for the birthday bags. Additionally, the volunteers shared some other needs of the food pantry including laundry detergent bags, pet food bags, and general help keeping the flower beds around Grand Rapids beautiful. As a result, the members are inspired for different service opportunities next year.
Colorful Clovers
Members of Colorful Clovers decided they wanted to increase the items they included in the Senior Smiles bags. They brainstormed ideas that would appeal to senior citizens and researched the cost. Bags were decorated with positive message stickers and members worked on items to include. They made flower pens, painted rocks, and warm fuzzies. Purchased items included a puzzle book, stamped stationery, lotion, ChapStick and a pop-it. Members had fun putting the bags together and hope the recipients enjoy them.
Country Roots
Country Roots 4-H Club purchased five pre-packaged first aid kits and signage to provide first aid relief to fairgoers who experienced any unplanned injuries while attending the fair. Club members assembled the boxes and worked with adult leads to hang the kits in the Pavilion, chicken & rabbit barn, horse barn, sheep arena and the junior fair office to provide convenient access to anyone in need. Upon completion of the fair, the boxes were collected and stored to be used again at next year’s fair. Inventory taken at close of fair showed fair utilization, mainly for bandages, wipes and safety pins. Country Roots 4-H Club looks forward to providing community service projects for years to come!
Dowling Stitch, Stir, and Stock
Members volunteered at the “Build Event” for “Let’s Build a Bed” at the St. John’s Lutheran Church in Stoney Ridge. “Let’s Build a Bed” is a non-profit organization that wants to make sure every child in NW Ohio has a place to sleep. The “Build Event” provided safe equipment and tools that turned a pile of lumber into a bed for a child. Dowling Stitch, Stir, and Stock, provided three beds for this cause.
Farmcrafters
The focus of the Farmcrafters 4-H Club was continued support for the Wood County 4-H Senior Smiles program and the 4-H Honor Flight Greetings program. 4-H youth handcrafted items to be shared with the meals on wheels program, (Senior Smiles) and made Honor Flight Greetings for Veterans to receive when they arrive home from their day in Washington D.C.
Haskins Clover Crew
Carter Historical Farm had a bright blue grain wagon donated to them, and they wanted it painted in a more historical color. Haskins Clover Crew was asked to volunteer to paint this for them. With the Inspire Kids to Do Grant, we were able to provide all the paint and materials for the wagon to be painted. Haskins Clover Crew had all hands-on deck with members and their families to paint the grain cart. All members were able to participate in this project and successfully paint the grain cart red and black.
Klassy Kids
Special attention has been given to our Veterans in past years by making greetings, writing letters to service members, and sending cookies overseas. This year the Klassy Kids 4-H Club purchased and decorated a flag retirement box. Members learned what our flag represents and about proper disposal. A collaborative program was designed with the North Baltimore American Legion. Members also created a craft with a flag for donation.
Portage Valley
The Portage Valley 4-H Club utilized funds to partner with the Cocoon domestic violence agency to support their new dog run. The Cocoon is one of only a small minority of shelters in the entire country that allow survivors to bring pets to shelter with them. Our club purchased three steel dog waste disposal stations, along with water bowls and toys for the new outdoor dog run being built through a partnership of local organizations and an eagle scout. These disposal stations will last for years and will help the Cocoon keep the area clean and well maintained.
Simply Stock
4-H members selected two projects as a part of their request in 2024. As a team they sand blasted and painted all the bleachers and benches at the Risingsun Community Park. The second project consisted of constructing and displaying 1,500 coloring books and crayons for youth visiting the Wood County Fair.
Wood-N-Horses
A safer and easier accessible environment was provided for horses and their riders this year at the fair thanks to the project completed by the Wood-N-Horses 4-H Club. They purchased mats, tie-out loops, and revamped the entire area. A great improvement for the Horse Department at the Wood County Fairgrounds.
